A warm, sunny weekend sandwiched between two days of storms gave visitors to the Newport Flower Show a magnificent venue for the 19th annual event in Newport, Rhode Island in late June.
With Rosecliff mansion as a setting, the creativity and green thumbs of hundreds of garden lovers bloomed profusely. Here are some of my own favorites for your enjoyment.
The mansion is of particular interest, in that it was the filming site for several scenes of The Great Gatsby.
Beautiful floral arrangements filled the front courtyard, each one showing the grace and practiced eye of its creator.
Succulents nestled in hypertufa and an interesting bit of driftwood.
Calming shades of green filled this planter designed entirely around foliage.
On the back terrace, growers showcased their skill with perfect specimens.
Bougainvillea in an amazing shade of hot pink.
Rare Vuylstekeara Orchid 'White Fairy' took top honors in the division.
'Solar Flame' lit up the corner with its hot colors.
Perfect white Phalaenopsis orchids 'Allegra'.
Intriguing Lady Slipper orchid.
More magnificent foliage, this one a Rex begonia known as 'Palomar Prince'.
Moving inside the mansion, this stunning staircase sets the stage for the opulence displayed in the grand ballroom.
The artistry of the floral designers was perfectly showcased in the Grand Ballroom of the mansion. Over forty arrangements filled the room, too many to include here, but some were especially spectacular.
At the end of the tour, the breathtaking view of the sea and more mansions from the back garden. A day to remember.
